Purposeful Healing

We all have different levels of pain and trauma. The same thing that shook me to the core, may not bother you at all. That doesn’t mean my feelings and by-product of such experiences are invalid. And vise-versa.

That old saying: “Time heals all wounds”? Yea that may be true to some degree. Or does the lapsed time just make it easier to disregard? Overlook? Stuff away? True and intentional healing doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens when you want it to happen. When you choose over and over again that you will no longer let this define you. When you realize that you are the one who holds the power. Not the event, person, tragedy, etc.

Similar to a child with a deep cut on the knee. Yes the healing hurts. Every time you bend your knee it reopens. But there is no choice whether or not you move that knee. If you want to eat, drink, use the bathroom, play…… You will move it. You will forget it’s there and get up too quickly and it’ll bleed again. Eventually that scab will hurt more than the original wound. It may be stubborn and not want to fall off. But you know if you just finish removing it, the pain will subside.

We teach our children this every day. Sure it’s uncomfortable. But maybe if we look at things in simple form, we can get to the bottom of it. Finding what it is you really need to truly and purposely heal. Eventually all you will have left is a scar. And a scar is nothing more than a reminder that healing has occurred.
